1.
- Sites of Injection: Anterolateral thigh
- Muscle Targeted: Vastus lateralis
- Origin: Lateral intermuscular septum; lateral lip of the linea aspera and the gluteal tuberosity
- Insertion: Patella via quadriceps tendon; tuberosity via patellar ligament
- Action: Extend the leg at the knee joint
- How to Locate: Palpate the muscle below the greater trochanter and above the knee joint. Divide the muscle into thirds, and administer the injection into the middle third.
2.
- Muscle of Site Injection: Deltoid
- Origin: Lateral part of the clavicle, acromion, and spine of scapula
- Insertion: Deltoid tuberosity of the humerus
- Action: Abducts arm; anterior fibers flex and medially rotate the arm; posterior fibers extend and laterally rotate the arm
- How to Locate: Expose the upper arm and find the acromion process by palpating the bony prominence. Lay three fingers across the deltoid muscle and below the acromion process; the injection site is in the middle of the muscle, which is 1-2 inches below the acromion.
