1. Throwing a baseball overhead

  • Teres major
    Action: Adduction and medial rotation of arm at shoulder joint, produce movement of the humerus at the glenohumeral joint
    Innervation: Lower subscapular nerve
  • Latissimus dorsi
    Action: Extension, adduction and medial rotation of the upper limb at the shoulder; raising trunk above arm
    Innervation: Thoracodorsal nerve

 

2. Kicking a ball

  • Sartorius
    Action: Flexes hip and knee, laterally rotates thigh if flexed at hip
    Innervation: Femoral nerve
  • Gluteus maximus
    Action: Lateral rotation of hip joint, maintenance of extended knee joint
    Innervation: Inferior gluteal nerve

 

3. Doing sit-ups

 

  • Rectus abdominis 
    Action: Trunk flexion, compresses abdominal viscera during intense effort, depresses ribs
    Innervation: Thoracoabdominal nerves
  • Obliquus externus abdominis
    Action: Helps rotate and twist the trunk, stabilized core of the body
    Innervation: Intercostal nerves, subcostal nerve

 

4. Breathing

  • Diaphragm
    Action: Primary muscle involved in breathing, contracts chest during inhalation, relaxes chest during exhalation
    Innervation: Phrenic nerves
  • External Intercostal Muscles
    Action: Elevates ribs, provides structural support to intercostal spaces
    Innervation: Anterior rami of thoracic nerves
