1. Platysma
Origin: Deep fascia over pectoralis major and deltoid
Insertion: Lower body of mandible
Action: Tenses skin of neck and depresses the mandible
2. Mentalis
Origin: Incisive fossa of the mandible
Insertion: Fascia and skin of the chin
Action: Elevate and wrinkles the chin, pulls lower lip out
3. Orbicularis oris
Origin: Muscular skips to surround muscles, indirectly from maxilla and mandible
Insertion: Muscles interlace to encircle the mouth
Action: Closes, purses, and protracts the lips; closes the mouth
4. Corrugator supercilii
Origin: Medial aspect of the supraorbital margin
Insertion: Skin underlying the eyebrow
Action: Vertical wrinkling of the bride of the nose (frowning)
5. Orbicularis oculi
Origin: Medial orbital margin
Insertion: No lateral attachment, muscle loops and returns to origin
Action: Closes eyelids, throws skin around orbit into folds to protect eyeball
6. Occipitofrontalis
Origin: Frontal belly: skin of eyebrows; Occipital belly: lateral 2/3 of superior nuchal line of occipital bone
Insertion: Galea aponeurotica
Action: Frontal belly: raises eyebrows and wrinkles skin of forehead; Occipital belly: retracts scalp
