  1. Throwing a baseball overhead

  • Pectoralis Major

    • Action: Clavicular head:flexes and adducts arm. Sternal head: adducts and medially rotates arm

    • Innervation: Medial pectoral nerve (from medial cord) and lateral pectoral nerve (from lateral cord) (C6, 7, 8)

  • Latissimus Dorsi

    • Action: Extends, adducts, and medially rotates the arm.

    • Innervation: Thoracodorsal nerve (C6, 7, 8) (from posterior cord)

  1. Kicking a ball

  • Quadriceps Femoris

    • Action: Extension of the knee joint. Contributes to flexion at the hip joint through the action of the rectus femoris

    • Innervation: Femoral nerve

  • Gluteus Maximus

    • Action: Thigh extension. It also assists with lateral rotation of the lower limb

    • Innervation: Inferior gluteal nerve

  1. Doing Sit-ups

  • Rectus Abdominis

    • Action: Flexes trunk

    • Innervation: Thoracoabdominal nerves (T7-T11)

  • External Obliques

    • Action: Flexion and contralateral rotation of the torso

    • Innervation: Lower six thoracic nerves (T7-T12).

  1. Breathing

  • Diaphragm

    • Action: Inspiration and assists in raising intra-abdominal pressure

    • Innervation: Phrenic nerve (motor) (C3, 4, 5).

  • External Intercostals

    • Action: Elevate ribs at costovertebral joints during inspiration

    • Innervation: Intercoastal nerves
