Targeted Muscle: vastus lateralis
Origin: Greater trochanter and the lateral lip of the linea aspera of the femur
Insertion: Tibial tuberosity via the patellar ligament
Action: Extends the knee
How to locate the area: For the thigh injection, the outer side of the thigh is used. The area is measured from the bony part at the top of the thigh, called the greater trochanter, down to the knee, with the injection aimed at the middle of the thigh muscle.

Site of injection: upper arm
Targeted Muscle: deltoid muscle
Origin: Lateral third of the clavicle, acromion, and the spine of the scapula
Insertion: Deltoid tuberosity of the humerus
Action: The deltoid muscle abducts the arm (moves it away from the body) and also helps in shoulder flexion and extension
How to locate the area: For the shoulder injection, the correct area is found by locating the bony part on top of the shoulder, the acromion. The injection site should be about 2–3 finger widths, or around 1-2 inches, below that point in the middle of the upper arm.
