1.

Sites of injection: Anterolateral thigh

Muscle targeted in Injection: Vastus lateralis

Origin: Greater trochanter and linea aspera of femur

Insertion: Patella via quadriceps tendon and then tuberosity via patellar ligament

Action: Extend leg at knee joint

How to locate: Divide the space between the greater trochanter and the top of the knee into three equal parts; draw a horizontal median line along the outer surface of the thigh; injection site is at the middle third, just above the horizontal line

2.

Muscle of site of injection: Deltoid of the upper arm

Origin: Acromial extremity of a clavicle, acromion of scapula, and spine of scapula

Insertion: Deltoid tuberosity of humerus

Action: Lateral fibers abduct arm at shoulder joint; anterior fibers flex and medially rotate arm at shoulder joint; posterior fibers extend and laterally rotate arm at shoulder joint

How to locate: find the acromion process or the bony prominence at the shoulder; relax the relevant arm of the patient; feel the dip within the acromion process and place two fingers down from it or 2.5 cm below the landmark and this should be the injection site
