1. Briefly describe the process of inflammation in an area that has been traumatized.

  • In an area that has been traumatized, inflammation will occur wherein it is the defensive response of the body. The process starts with vasodilation and increased vascular permeability. This would enable more blood to flow towards the traumatized area and enable antibodies to pass through towards the area. Second, phagocytes migrate towards the area, wherein neutrophils try to invade microbes and monocytes help in increasing phagocytic activity. Last, as macrophages die, pus is formed and is gradually destroyed and tissue repair and remodeling occurs.

2.  Choose one type of Immunity (Innate and Humoral) and explain how its mechanism protects our body.

  • Humoral immunity/Antibody-mediated immunity protects the body through antibodies or immunoglobulins that eliminate extracellular microbes. These antibodies are secreted by B lymphocytes and they neutralize antigens and immobilize bacteria to prevent the spread towards body cells and tissues. Its mechanism includes activating the complement, enhancing phagocytosis and therefore agglutination, and precipitating the antigen to enhance the activity of phagocytes.
