Lists of cranial nerves affected by the viral infection:

In general, the Facial (VII) nerve was primarily affected by the viral infection. The other cranial nerves involved per symptom are listed below:

  • Inability to move the muscles on the right side of her face:

    • Facial (VII) nerve: responsible for control of muscles of facial expression

  • Loss of taste

    • Facial (VII) nerve: the sensory component of the nerve is responsible for taste from the anterior two-thirds of the tongue

    • Glossopharyngeal (IX) nerve: its sensory component is responsible for taste from the posterior one-third of the tongue

    • Vagus (X) nerve: its sensory component is responsible for taste from the epiglottis

  • Dry mouth:

    • Glossopharyngeal (IX) nerve: its motor (autonomic) component is responsible for the secretion of saliva

    • Facial (VII) nerve: its motor (autonomic) component is also responsible for the secretion of saliva

  • Cannot close right eye:

    • Oculomotor (III) nerve: responsible for the movement of the upper eyelid

    • Facial (VII) nerve: responsible for the control of muscles of facial expression
