Three cranial nerves—III (oculomotor), VII (facial), and IX (glossopharyngeal)—are affected by the viral infection. Salivary glands, taste perceptions, as well as face expression and movement, are all regulated by cranial nerve VII. Upper eyelid movement is controlled by cranial nerve III, while taste perception is controlled by cranial nerve IX. Virus-induced malfunction of these nerves results in loss of taste, mouth dryness, and partial facial paralysis.
