Activity 2

  1. Throwing a baseball overhead
    • Deltoid Muscles
      • Action: Acromial extremity of clavicle (anterior fibers), acromion of scapula (lateral fibers), and spine of scapula (posterior fibers)
      • Innervation: Axillary nerve.
    • Pectoralis Major
      • Action: Clavicle (clavicular head), sternum, and costal cartilages of ribs 2–6 and sometimes ribs 1–7 (sternocostal head).
      • Innervation: Medial and lateral pectoral nerves
  2. Kicking a ball
    • Rectus femoris
      • Action: Anterior inferior iliac spine.
      • Innervation: Femoral nerve.
    • Biceps femoris
      • Action: Long head arises from ischial tuberosity; short head arises from linea aspera of femur.
      • Innervation: Tibial and fibular nerves from sciatic nerve.
  3. Doing sit-ups
    • Rectus Abdominis
      • Action: Pubic crest and pubic symphysis.
      • Innervation: Thoracic spinal nerves T7–T12.
    • Transverse Abdominis
      • Action: Iliac crest, inguinal ligament, lumbar fascia, and cartilages of ribs 5–10.
      • Innervation: Thoracic spinal nerves T8–T12, iliohypogastric nerve, and ilioinguinal nerve.
  4. Breathing
    • Diaphragm
      • Action: Xiphoid process of sternum, costal cartilages and adjacent portions of ribs 7–12, lumbar vertebrae and their intervertebral discs.
      • Innervation: Phrenic nerve, which contains axons from cervical spinal nerves (C3–C5).
    • External intercostals muscles
      • Action: Inferior border of rib above.
      • Innervation: Thoracic spinal nerves T2–T12.
