1. Infant - PCV and Penta vaccines

  • Site of injection: Anterolateral thigh
  • Target muscle: Vastus lateralis
  • Origin: intertrochanteric line, greater trochanter, lateral aspect of the linea aspera, gluteal tuberosity, and the lateral intermuscular septum
  • Insertion: lateral aspect of the patella and tibial tuberosity via the patellar tendon
  • Action: Extension of the knee joint
  • How to locate area: Divide the muscle into thirds, and inject into the middle third, in the outer anterolateral aspect, lateral to the midpoint of the thigh

2. 65-year old - Influenza vaccine

  • Site of injection: Upper arm
  • Target muscle: Deltoid muscle
  • Origin: clavicle, acromion and spine of scapula
  • Insertion: deltoid tuberosity of humerus
  • Action: produce abduction of shoulder joint, lifting arms frontward, sideward, and backward
  • How to locate area: Palpate the acromion, and trace an imaginary inverted triangle below the shoulder. Injection site is in the middle of the imaginary triangle.
