  1. Throwing a baseball overhead
  • Pectoralis major
    • Innervation: Lateral and medial pectoral nerves (C5-T1)
    • Action: adducts and medially rotates arm at shoulder joint; clavicular head flexes arm, and sternocostal head extends flexed arm to side of trunk.
  • Latissimus dorsi
    • Innervation: Thoracodorsal nerve (C6, 7, 8)
    • Action: Extends, adducts, and medially rotates arm at shoulder joint; draws arm inferiorly and posteriorly. RMA: Elevates vertebral column and torso.

 

  1. Kicking a ball
  • Quadriceps femoris
    • Innervation: Femoral nerve (L2-L4)
    • Action: extension of the knee joint
  • Biceps Femoris
    • Innervation: Femoral nerve
    • Action: Extends, adducts, and medially rotates arm at shoulder joint; draws arm inferiorly and posteriorly.
  1. Doing sit-ups
  • Transversus abdominis
    • Innervation: Thoracoabdominal nerves (T7-T11), subcostal nerve (T12) and branches of the lumbar plexus
    • Action: Compresses abdomen.
  • Rectus abdominis
    • Innervation: Thoracoabdominal nerves (T7-T11)
    • Action: Flexes vertebral column, especially lumbar portion, and compresses abdomen to aid in defecation, urination, forced exhalation, and childbirth.
  1. Breathing
  • Diaphragm
    • Innervation: Phrenic nerve
    • Action: Flexes vertebral column, especially lumbar portion, and compresses abdomen to aid in defecation, urination, forced exhalation, and childbirth.
  • Internal intercostal muscles
    • Innervation: Intercostal nerve
    • Action: draws adjacent ribs together to further decrease anteroposterior and lateral dimensions of thoracic cavity during forced exhalation.
