Patient 1: 2-month-old well female Infant.
It is immunization day at the health center. The first patient is a 2-month-old well female infant who is scheduled for the following vaccinations: pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV), pentavalent vaccine (Penta) and oral polio vaccine. PCV and Penta are given via intramuscular route.
Sites of injection: Anterolateral Thigh
Targeted in the injection: Vastus lateralis.
Origin: Via a broad aponeurosis from various sites on the femur, such as the proximal half of the intertrochanteric line.
Insertion: inserts to the base of patella via the quadriceps tendon.
Action: The vastus laterails collaborate with the other quad muscles to assist expand your knee joint.
Locate: Patient lying down, locate vastus lateralis by feeling under greater trochanter and above lateral femoral condyle. Inject middle third of muscle, outer anterolateral aspect, away from thigh midline.
Patient 2: 65-year-old Grandfather
The baby’s 65-year-old grandfather also came to the center because influenza vaccine is being offered to senior citizens. The flu vaccine is given intramuscularly.
Site of injection: Deltoid
Origin: Acromial extremity of clavicle (anterior fibers), acromion of scapula (lateral fibers), and spine of scapula (posterior fibers).
Insertion: Deltoid tuberosity of humerus
Action: Lateral fibers abduct arm at shoulder joint; anterior fibers flex and medially rotate arm at shoulder joint; posterior fibers extent and laterally rotate arm at shoulder joint.
Locate: Give in the thickest and most central part of the deltoid muscle, above the armpit and around 2-3 fingerbreadths (2") below the acromion process (see diagram 1).
