INTRAMUSCULAR (IM) INJECTION SITES

1. First patient: 2-month old well female infant

  • Site of injection: The anterolateral thigh muscle
  • Targeted muscle: vastus lateralis
  • Origin: Greater trochanter and linea aspera of femur.
  • Insertion: Patella via quadriceps tendon and then tibial tuberosity via patellar ligament.
  • Action: It is responsible for leg extension at knee joint.
  • How to locate: The position of the intramuscular injection is indicated by the top border of this muscle being a width below the groin/great trochanter and the bottom border being a breadth above the knee. The side borders, on the other hand, extend from the center of the anterior thigh to the center of the lateral thigh.

2. Second patient: 65-year-old Grandfather

  • Site of injection: Upper arm
  • Muscle: Deltoid muscle
  • Origin: Acromial extremity of clavicle (anterior fibers), acromion of scapula (lateral fibers), and spine of scapula (posterior fibers).
  • Insertion: Deltoid tuberosity of humerus.
  • Action: At the shoulder joint, lateral fibers abduct the arm, anterior fibers flex the arm and medially rotate it, and posterior fibers stretch the arm and laterally rotate it.
  • How to locate: First, locate the Achromion process. Place two fingers horizontally at the Achromion process's bottom (this will act as the triangle's base). Use the other hand to make a peace sign before completing the inverted triangle with it. The center of the triangle will serve as the injection point.
