  1. Throwing a baseball overhead

  • Latissimus dorsi

    • Action: Extends, adducts and medially rotates arm

    • Innervation: Thoracodorsal nerve (C6-C8)

  • Pectoralis major

    • Action: Arm adduction, flexion, and extension

    • Innervation: Lateral and medial pectoral nerves (C5-T1)

  1. Kicking a ball

  • Gastrocnemius and soleus muscles

    • Action: Plantar flexes foot and flexes leg at knee joint

    • Innervation: Tibial nerve

  • Tibialis anterior

    • Action: Dorsiflexes foot at talocrural joint and inverts foot at intertarsal joints

    • Innervation: Deep fibular nerve

  1. Doing sit-ups

  • Rectus abdominis

    • Action: Flexion of trunk

    • Innervation: Intercostal nerves (T7-T11) & Subcostal nerve (T12)

  • Transverse abdominis

    • Action: Bilateral contraction, Unilateral contraction

    • Innervation: Intercostal nerves (T7-T11), Subcostal nerve (T12), Iliohypogastric nerve (L1), Ilioinguinal nerve (L1)

  1. Breathing

  • Diaphragm

    • Action: Contraction of diaphragm (flatten and increases vertical dimension of thoracic cavity) resulting in inhalation, relaxation of diaphragm (move superiorly and decreases vertical dimension of thoracic cavity), resulting in exhalation.

    • Innervation: Phrenic nerve (C3-C5)

  • External intercostals

    • Action: Contraction elevates ribs and increases anteroposterior and lateral dimensions of thoracic cavity, inhalation. Relaxation depresses ribs and decreases anteroposterior and lateral dimensions of thoracic cavity, exhalation

    • Innervation: Spinal nerves (T2-T12)
