PCV and Penta vaccine on a 2 month old
Site of injection: Anterolateral thigh
Target muscle: Vastus lateralisÂ
- Origin: Lateral intermuscular septum, lateral lip of the linea aspera and the gluteal tuberosity
- Insertion: Patella and medial patellar retinaculum
- Action: Extends leg
To locate the site of injection, divide thigh muscle into thirds. The vastus lateralis site would be found in the second division, about halfway between the knee and the greater trochanter of the femur.
Influenza vaccine on a 65 year old
Target muscle: Deltoid
- Origin: Lateral one-third of the clavicle, acromion, the lower lip of the crest of the spine of the scapula
- Insertion: Deltoid tuberosity of the humerus
- Action: Abducts arm; flexes anterior fibers & medially rotates the arm; extends posterior fibers & laterally rotates the arm
To locate the site of injection, find the bony part of the shoulder or the acromion process. Make an imaginary inverted triangle below the shoulder. The deltoid site would be in the middle of the triangle, 3-5 cm below the acromion.
