- Action: Contracts during inhalation to create a vacuum and obtain air; relaxes to release space and air
- Innervation: Phrenic nerves
External Intercostal Muscles
- Action: Everts ribs during forced inspiration; expansion of lungs
- Innervation: Anterior rami of spinal nerves (T1-T11)
