We often hear about the function and significance of our organ systems, but it seems to me that people do not recognize enough how the lymphatic system is especially important in protecting our bodies from illness-causing invaders that are literally all around us. Imagine, every time we touch our face with the hand we used to hold the railings or inhale the same air as someone who might have an infectious disease, the harmful agents that may enter the body are right away trapped and detected by our immune system and it responds from there accordingly. Little did we know that the simple secretion of mucus, vomiting, and defecation that we go through are the body’s way to confine and expel microbes from the body. Even the inflammation and fever that we experience are defense mechanisms to inhibit the growth of these foreign substances and speed up healing. However, although this is something that our bodies naturally do, how resilient our immune system is depends upon our health and lifestyle. Thus, we must do our part by improving our eating habits, engaging in regular physical activities, getting enough sleep, avoiding harmful substances, hydrating, taking vitamins, resting, and relieving stress in order to boost our immunity.
