  1. How the food changes consistency and form

Humans grind the food through chewing and hydrolysis to turn food into a bolus. The bolus will then pass through the esophagus to reach the stomach. The stomach is responsible for churning and hydrolysis of bolus to make chyme. Chyme will go to the small intestine for absorption. Then, what’s left from the absorption will go to the large intestine and the rectum for expulsion.

  1. How the body was able to absorb the nutrients from the foods we eat.

Absorption of the nutrients from the food we eat only starts when the food reaches the small intestine. The chyme, composed of digestive enzymes and digested food, enters the small intestine from the stomach. The nutrients from the chyme will be absorbed into the small intestine through the tiny projections called villi. Villi are hair-like linings of the small intestines. They trap the nutrients from the digested food and transport them into the bloodstream. Lastly, nutrients enter the body cells.
