1. How the food changes consistency and form
The food we intake changes consistency and form through the different and functional parts of the gastrointestinal tract. When we eat, the food enters our mouth or the oral cavity where chewing or the morcellation of food occurs, functioning for physical breakdown. Hydrolysis, which is the enzymatic digestion or breakdown, also takes place. As food breaks down, bolus or a sphere of digested food that is permissible to be swallowed and passed onto the next GI structure is formed. This bolus passes through the esophagus to reach the stomach, where chyme is produced and then passed onto the intestines.
2. How the body was able to absorb the nutrients from the foods we eat
The body absorbs nutrients from the food we eat through the small intestine, where digestion and absorption of nutrients take place. This is the first part of the GI tract wherein some of the breakdown food products are taken in by the body, and further utilized for nutrition to make other products as the small intestine is able to absorb 90% of the nutrients and water passing through the digestive system.
