ACTIVITY 1: The Food Journey
How the food changes consistency and form
The food changes consistency and form through the functions of the different parts of the digestive system. First, once the food enters our mouth and we start chewing the food, hydrolysis occurs, and the food is transformed into a bolus. Afterward, our esophagus will propel the bolus to the stomach once we swallow the food. Second, churning & hydrolysis occurs in the stomach, forming a chyme. Lastly, the small and large intestines will perform absorption. The former absorbs nutrients, while the latter absorbs the remaining water, ions, and vitamin K. Subsequently forming the chyme into feces.
How the body was able to absorb the nutrients from the foods we eat.
The body is able to absorb the nutrients from the foods we eat through the small intestine. Nearly all of the nutrients you take from meals are absorbed into your circulation through the small intestine, which also performs most of the digestion process. It produces digestive juices, or enzymes, that work with liver and pancreatic enzymes to absorb vital nutrients that the body needs to make other necessary byproducts
