Choose one concept in our lesson today, give a brief explanation about the concept and cite how would you apply this learning in your everyday life.
Within the intertwined ideas in the bubble of thoughts in relation to inflammation is the concept of pain and protection. While we are accustomed to the notion of being vulnerable when in pain, the process of inflammation reveals otherwise as evident in one of its protective functions which states that the more that we are in pain, the more we protect ourselves. During the first stage of the inflammatory response, the human body releases two hormones identified as bradykinin and histamine with the primary function of increasing permeability and inducing vasodilation. Alongside these functions, these two inflammatory mediators trigger the release of pain signals when nerves are irritated and in response, the self protects the inflamed area of the body from external pain-causing factors.
In our daily lives when the self is too drained to protect the body, the body surprises the self with how it was built as if protection is a reflex action. As such, may we no longer be afraid to get hurt because even in the most vulnerable times, the body has its ways of protecting itself. As student nurses, recognizing these self-protecting actions in the absence of external injuries allows us to discern when a patient is in any discomfort due to inflammation as a precursor to a probable internal trauma.
