One concept that struck me is inflammation. It is a nonspecific response of the body to tissue damage. I learned that it is composed of three stages (1) vasodilation of blood vessels, (2) emigration of phagocytes, (3) and tissue repair. Its symptoms redness, heat, swelling, pain, and loss of function. This concept is applicable to my grandmother who occasionally experiences arthritis in the knee area. Arthritis is often caused by a hypersensitive immune system that causes the body to attack its own joints. Knowing the reason behind this disease, as well as its symptoms, could help me alleviate the discomfort experienced by my grandmother from this ailment.
