Describe the process of inflammation in an area that has been traumatized, but not infected.
-
Inflammation occurs when a particular part of our body has gone through a trauma which is like a defensive mechanism of our body. As mentioned in the book, the three stages of inflammation include vasodilation of arterioles and increased blood vessel permeability, phagocyte emigration (movement of phagocytes from the circulation into interstitial fluid), and tissue healing are the three primary stages of inflammation. Inflammation often presents symptoms like redness, discomfort, and swelling of a particular area. It aims to remove certain bacteria and foreign elements from the body to maintain the injured site.

Choose one type of Immunity (Innate and Humoral) and explain how its mechanism protects our body.
Innate immunity or natural immunity is inherited from a parent to a child and is active right after childbirth(The Immune System, n.d.). Innate immunity serves as a barrier to keep harmful viruses from entering the body. According to the Center for Innate Immunity and Immune Disease (n.d.), the innate immune system is the first to detect and respond to invaders such as viruses, bacteria, etc. It is also the first to sense wounds or trauma and protects the body against all antigens. In addition, Alberts et al. (2002) explained that we heavily rely on the innate immune system in our first exposure to a new pathogen. This acts as a shield from any infections.
