ACTIVITY 2

Choose one concept in our lesson today, give a brief explanation about the concept and cite how would you apply this learning in your everyday life.

Our discussion about the lymphatic system enlightened me on how the body protects itself from different foreign bodies and it made me realize just how important it is that we take good care of our immune system since it is the first line of defense of the body and once it is compromised, our body becomes vulnerable to a lot of risks.

Among the concepts that we have discussed today, the one that I liked the most is the concept of inflammation. Most of us have probably heard this concept but are not aware of how it occurs. So basically, inflammation occurs when the immune system sends inflammatory cells and cytokines which begin an inflammatory response to trap bacteria and other offending agents or start healing injured tissue. Usually, it is manifested through pain, swelling, bruising, or redness. However, once it is prolonged, it may affect our bodies negatively. Knowing this concept is important especially in our daily lives because the manifestations of inflammation make us aware if there is something wrong with our body so that we can work on it immediately. This also gives us a signal if it is already time to consult our physicians especially if the inflammation has been occurring for quite some time. This learning is also very important for us student nurses because if we know how inflammation manifests itself, it gives us an idea about the condition of the patient and this can already serve as our benchmark as we create our nursing plan.
