  1. Briefly describe the process of inflammation in an area that has been traumatized.

When an area has been traumatized due to an injury, there is an immediate response from the lymphatic system – inflammation of the said area. This process is done to allow the area to heal again by removing some components of damaged tissue. There are three stages of inflammation, namely the (1) Inflammatory Response, (2) Repair and Regeneration, and (3) Remodelling and Maturation.

The Inflammatory Response stage lasts for 3-5 days immediately after the injury. The acute vascular inflammatory response is triggered to increase blood flow to the area to initiate healing. At the same time, the damaged cells are removed and replaced by new collagen. Second, the Repair and Regeneration stage lasts for 2 days to 8 weeks. This stage is centered on the new collagen that was formed in the area. Once the new collagen fibers are laid in a form of a scar, weak links are put in between each fiber, making the new tissue weak and susceptible to disruption. Lastly, the Remodelling and Maturation stage lasts for months to years, depending on its completion. This phase focuses on the remodeling, strengthening, and improvement of the area’s cellular organization. Although there is not much collagen formation, the collagen fibers are now stronger in this stage. New collagen is encouraged to orient along the lines of stress, therefore making tension important in this stage.

  1. Choose one type of Immunity (Innate and Humoral) and explain how its mechanism protects our body.

Innate immunity is an inborn defense system that protects the body against antigens by the involvement of barriers that gate the body from harmful materials. It also has a protein chemical form named the “innate humoral immunity” that includes the body’s complement system. In fact, the involved barriers make up the first line of defense in the immune system.
