Your patient recently had a viral infection and now she cannot move the muscles on the right side of her face. In addition, she is experiencing a loss of taste and dry mouth and she cannot close her right eye. Which cranial nerves have been affected by the viral infection?

The viral infection that the patient obtained most probably attacked the VII Facial cranial nerve. Damage to this nerve can cause facial weakness, as well as insufficient tears and saliva, a diminished sense of taste, and decreased sensation behind the ears (Moawad, MD. 2022). These symptoms are exhibited by the patient. Thus, it is safe to conclude that the patient has damage to the VII Facial cranial nerve due to the viral infection.
