Your patient recently had a viral infection and now she cannot move the muscles on the right side of her face. In addition, she is experiencing a loss of taste and dry mouth and she cannot close her right eye. Which cranial nerves have been affected by the viral infection?

  • The symptoms of the patient indicate that she has Bell's Palsy. It is a condition that leads to muscle weakness on one side of the face. This is a result of the infection of the facial nerve, also known as the seventh cranial nerve, cranial nerve VII, or simply CN VII; a cranial nerve that emerges from the brainstem's pons and controls the muscles of facial expression as well as conveying taste sensations from the anterior two-thirds of the tongue.
