5 Muscles that were affected 

 

  1. Buccinator- compresses cheeks into teeth for chewing 

  2. Frontalis- Is responsible for raising of eyebrows and wrinkles forehead 

  3. Orbicularis oris- closes, protrudes and compresses on lips 

  4. Orbicularis oculi- closes the eyelids and assist in pumping the tears from the eye into the nasolacrimal duct system 

  5. Platysma- contribute to producing a myriad of facial expressions

 

Mechanism of Muscle weakness 

 

Bell’s palsy is a condition that causes sudden weakness in the muscles on one side of the face. The weakness makes half of the face appear to droop. 

 

Other possible symptoms:

  • Rapid onset of mild weakness to total paralysis on one side of the face 

  • Facial droop and difficulty in making facial expressions

  • Drooling 

  • Pain around the jaw or in or behind the ear on the affected side
