This is Hidilyn Diaz. She won the Philippines’ first-ever Olympic gold medal in the clean and jerk weightlifting category for the 55-kg weight division during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Give 5 examples of muscles with isotonic contractions and 5 examples of muscles with isometric contractions during the activity in the gif below.

Isotonic contractions are contractions that involve the shortening of muscles; this means that there is a change in the length of the muscles. With that being said, some leg and thigh muscles that exhibit isotonic contractions (as seen or exhibited by Hidilyn Diaz) are the following:

  1. Hamstrings

  2. Gastrocnemius

  3. Quadriceps femoris

  4. Rectus femoris

  5. Adductor magnus

As opposed to isotonic contractions, isometric contractions are known as the tightening of specific muscles or muscle groups that do not exhibit changes in length. The following are examples of muscles that exhibit isometric contractions as seen from Hidilyn Diaz:

  1. Deltoid muscle

  2. Pectoralis major

  3. Latissimus dorsi

  4. Trapezius

  5. Rectus abdominis
