Five muscles that were affected by the Bell's Palsy are Occipito frontalis (raises the eyebrows), Orbicularis oculi (closes the eye), Risorius (pulls the angle of mouth backward), Nasalis (depresses tip of the nose and helps in elevating corner of nostrils), and mentalis (wrinkles chin). The mechanism of Bell's Palsy is caused by the swelling of the seventh cranial nerve which affects the function of nerves responsible for some of the facial muscles. Other symptoms that the patient can express are drooling, pain or numbness behind the ears, headaches, and decreased tasting ability.
