MECHANISM OF MUSCLE WEAKNESS

Bell's palsy is a condition that causes facial muscles to become temporarily paralyzed and unable to be controlled. Although it is said to have no definite cause, Bell's palsy occurs when the seventh cranial nerve (the one controlling facial expressions) is inflamed and not working correctly. It usually only affects one side of the face, causing the facial features on one side to "droop"--examples of this are presented in patient AM:  drooping corner of the mouth, loss of nasolabial fold, and drooping eye.

OTHER SYMPTOMS

  • Drool
  • Feel pain in jaw or behind ear on the affected side
  • Headaches
  • Have less sense of taste
  • Have dry eyes and mouth
  • Tinnitus
  • Sound sensitivity on affected side
  • Difficulty in speaking
  • Difficulty in eating and drinking
