1.)
- Sites of injection: anterolateral thigh
- Muscle: Vastus lateralis
- Origin: Greater trochanter and linea aspera of femur
- Insertion: Patella via quadriceps tendon and then tibial tuberosity via patellar ligament
- Action: extend leg at knee joint
- How to locate:
- Find the greater trochanter of the femur.
- Create an imaginary box that will encompass the vastus lateralis.
- One hand width below the groin is the top border.
- One hand width above the knee is the bottom border.
- From mid anterior thigh to mid lateral thigh are the side borders.
- This is the vastus lateralis. Ideal site for injection is nearer to the mid lateral thigh.
2.)
- Muscle: Deltoid
- Origin: Acromial extremity of clavicle (anterior fibers), acromion of scapula (lateral fibers), and spine of scapula (posterior fibers)
- Insertion: Deltoid tuberosity of humerus
- Action: Lateral fibers abduct arm at shoulder joint; anterior fibers flex and medially rotate arm at shoulder joint; posterior fibers extend and laterally rotate arm at shoulder joint
- How to locate:
- Create an imaginary box.
- 1-2 finger widths from acromion process is the top border.
- Insertion of the deltoid muscle approximately from the fold of the axilla is the bottom border.
- This is the deltoid muscle. Inject in the middle part of this box.
- Create an imaginary box.
