1.)

  • Sites of injection: anterolateral thigh
  • Muscle: Vastus lateralis
  • Origin: Greater trochanter and linea aspera of femur
  • Insertion: Patella via quadriceps tendon and then tibial tuberosity via patellar ligament
  • Action: extend leg at knee joint
  • How to locate:
    • Find the greater trochanter of the femur.
    • Create an imaginary box that will encompass the vastus lateralis.
      • One hand width below the groin is the top border.
      • One hand width above the knee is the bottom border.
      • From mid anterior thigh to mid lateral thigh are the side borders.
    • This is the vastus lateralis. Ideal site for injection is nearer to the mid lateral thigh.

2.)

  • Muscle: Deltoid
  • Origin: Acromial extremity of clavicle (anterior fibers), acromion of scapula (lateral fibers), and spine of scapula (posterior fibers)
  • Insertion: Deltoid tuberosity of humerus
  • Action: Lateral fibers abduct arm at shoulder joint; anterior fibers flex and medially rotate arm at shoulder joint; posterior fibers extend and laterally rotate arm at shoulder joint
  • How to locate:
    • Create an imaginary box.
      • 1-2 finger widths from acromion process is the top border.
      • Insertion of the deltoid muscle approximately from the fold of the axilla is the bottom border.
    • This is the deltoid muscle. Inject in the middle part of this box.
