ACTIVITY 3

1) It is immunization day at the health center. The first patient is a 2-month old well female infant who is scheduled for the following vaccinations: pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV), pentavalent vaccine (Penta) and oral polio vaccine. PCV and Penta are given via intramuscular route. Where are the sites of injection? What muscle is targeted in the injection? Write down its origin, insertion and action. How do you locate this area?

PCV

PENTA

Sites of Injection

anterolateral part of the left thigh

right outer upper thigh

Muscle Targeted in the Injection: Vastus Lateralis

Origin: intertrochanteric line, greater trochanter, gluteal tuberosity, linea aspera of femur

Insertion: Tibial tuberosity (via patellar ligament), patella, (lateral condyle of tibia)

Action: knee joint: leg extension

How do you locate this area?

First, you have to locate the greater trochanter of the femur. The top border of the vastus lateralis can be found a hand width below the groin. The bottom border of this muscle can be found a hand above the knee. The side borders are from the mid anterior thigh to the mid-lateral thigh.

2) The baby’s 65-year-old grandfather also came to the center because influenza vaccine is being offered to senior citizens. The flu vaccine is given intramuscularly. Which muscle is the preferred site for IM injection in this case? Write down its origin, insertion and action. How do you locate this area?

Influenza Vaccine

Site of Injection

Upper Arm

Muscle Targeted in the Injection: Deltoid Muscle

Origin: Lateral ⅓ of Clavicle (clavicular part), Acromion (acromial part), spine of scapula (spinal part)

Insertion: deltoid tuberosity of humerus

Action: flexion and internal rotation of the arm, abduction of the arm beyond the initial 15 degrees, and extension and external rotation of the arm

How do you locate this area?

This muscle has a large rounded triangular shape on the outside of the upper arm, on top of the humerus, the clavicle and the scapula.
