ACTIVITY 2

Name at least three muscles that actively contract during the following activities and name their action and innervation.

1. Turning a door knob:

    • Supinator

      • Action: proximal radioulnar joint: forearm supination

      • Innervation: posterior interosseous nerve (C7, C8)

    • Brachioradialis

      • Action: elbow joint: forearm flexion (when semi pronated)

      • Innervation: radial nerve (C5-C6)

    • Biceps brachii

      • Action: flexion and supination of the forearm at the elbow joint

      • Innervation: musculocutaneous nerve (C5-C6)

 2. Throwing a baseball overhead

    • Deltoids

      • Action: Flexion and internal rotation of the arm, abduction of the arm beyond the initial 15 degrees, and extension and external rotation of the arm

      • Innervation: axillary nerve (C5, C6)

    • Triceps

      • Action: Extension of the forearm and extension and adduction of the arm

      • Innervation: radial nerve (C6-C8)

    • Latissimus dorsi

      • Action: arm internal rotation, arm adduction, arm extension

      • Innervation: thoracodorsal nerve

3. Kicking a ball:

    • Psoas major

      • Action: flexion of the tigh/trunk, lateral rotation of the thigh, and lateral flexion of the trunk

      • Innervation: anterior rami of spinal nerves L1-L3

    • Psoas minor

      • Action: weak trunk flexion

      • Innervation: anterior ramus of spinal nerve L1

    • Iliacus

      • Action: Hip joint: thigh/trunk flexion

      • Innervation: femoral nerve (L1-L3)

 4. Doing sit-ups

    • Rectus abdominis

      • Action: trunk flexion, compresses abdominal viscera, expiration

      • Innervation: Intercostal nerves (T7-T11), subcostal nerve (T12)

    • Iliopsoas

      • Action: flexion and external rotation of the thigh at the hip join, flexion of the trunk at the hip, lateral flexion of the trunk (psoas major only)

      • Innervation: iliacus (femoral nerve L2-L4) and psoas major (anterior rami of spinal nerves L1-L3)

    • Rectus femoris

      • Action: thigh flexion (hop joint), and leg extension (knee joint)

      • Innervation: femoral nerve (L2-L4)

5. Walking:

    • Soleus

      • Action: foot plantar flexion

      • Innervation: tibial nerve (S1, S2)

    • Gastrocnemius

      • Action: foot plantar flexion and leg flexion

      • Innervation: tibial nerve (S1, S2)

    • Peroneals

      • Action: plantar flexion and eversion of the foot

      • Innervation: superficial fibular nerve (L5, S1)

6. Breathing

    • Serratus anterior

      • Action: draws scapula anterolaterally, suspends scapula on thoracic wall and rotates scapula

      • Innervation: long thoracic nerve

    • External intercostal muscles

      • Action: Elevate ribs during forced inspiration, supports intercostal spaces and thoracic cage

      • Innervation: intercostal nerves

    • Rectus abdominis

      • Action: trunk flexion, compression of abdominal viscera, and expiration

      • Innervation: intercostal nerves (T7-T11) and subcostal nerve (T12)
