Choose one concept in our lesson today, give a brief explanation about the concept and cite how this learning can be applied in your daily life.

  • As I studied the different concepts of the integumentary system, skin color is the lesson that I can apply to my daily life. Melanin is one of the three pigments that gives color to the skin. The number of melanocytes are just about the same in most of us, however, the amount of pigment the melanocytes produce are what causes the differences in skin color. Age spots, freckles, and the lightness or darkness of our skin are mainly caused by the pigmentation our body produces. These physical properties do not make an individual any less of a person. I can apply this concept to my everyday life by being more open-minded and knowledgeable about current issues such as color discrimination and racism. Having darker skin does not mean they are inferior to people who have lighter complexions. Having spots and freckles does not mean unattractiveness. After watching a video about a Kenyan boy diagnosed with albinism, I was inspired to take one of the concepts I learned from this lesson and turn it into something I will keep in mind everyday.
