Give other examples of disturbances in the internal environment that can act as a stimulus to a feedback mechanism.

  • Negative feedback stimulus example:
    • A mechanism that lowers blood pressure is activated when the pressure in the aorta is higher than normal.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎
    • The release of a hormone that has the effect of reducing blood calcium levels is triggered when blood calcium levels rise.
    • An increase in blood sugar levels causes the pancreas to secrete a hormone, which in turn causes the liver to become more active in its storage of blood sugar.
    • The kidneys are able to detect a lack of oxygen, which triggers the production of erythropoiesis by these organs. Red blood cells are produced at a faster rate as a result of this hormone‎ stimulation.‎‎
  • Positive feedback stimulus example:
    • The rise in estrogen that occurs during menstruation period causes the uterus to produce a greater number of progesterone receptors.
    • The contractions of the uterus that occur during labor and delivery.
    • The formation of a blood clot, which amplifies compounds already present in the clot and stimulates more clothing until the clot is enclosed.
    • Whether it's a virus or bacterium that's causing the fever, the body will heat itself up to try and get rid of it. This will continue until the virus or bacteria is eliminated.
