The really amazing thing I learned today is how the integumentary system works to heal our wounds. Deep wound healing happens in four stages: inflammatory phase, a migratory phase, a proliferative phase, and a maturation phase. It’s amazing how quickly the body responds to decrease the bleeding and prevent any kinds of bacteria from passing through. I learned that inflammation is a natural part of the wound healing process as phagocytic cells, neutrophils and macrophages, work to clean the wound. The wound is rebuilt with new granulation tissue and new blood vessels are formed. Collagen fibers reorganize, the tissue remodels and matures. For application, I am always tempted to scratch my wound during its healing process because of the itchiness. But since now that I have a better appreciation of how the skin heals deep wounds, I now know that scratching my wounds is just wasting the effort of my integumentary system to produce new skin cells for my body.
