The Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum contains enzymes responsible for degrading inorganic toxins, such as alcohol and drugs. This organelle is especially prevalent in hepatocytes (liver cells), wherein the blood is filtered and toxins are removed for degradation. While peroxisomes, detoxify alcohol and other harmful compounds by transferring hydrogen from the poisons to molecules of oxygen.
As my friend consumes too much alcohol, it will cause numerous pathological stress responses within these organelles. If left untreated, it may prevent the ER from folding proteins properly, which could lead to cell death. Alcoholism can impair our peroxisomes' ability to oxidize substances, but it can also accumulate toxic molecules in other parts of our bodies, that can lead to disease. The breakdown of these compounds would be extremely sluggish because our cells' number of these organelles would similarly decline.
