Choose one concept in our lesson today, give a brief explanation about the concept and cite how thisĀ learning can be applied in your everyday life.
The concept I would like to highlight is epidermal wound healing, which refers to the repair of our epidermis in response to wounds such as abrasion and minor burns. As someone who is very careless, I usually get minor burns from oil splatters whenever I cook. It is just fascinating to know how my wound heals. The basal cells migrate across the wound until it meets the advanced cells from the opposite side of the wound. Once the epidermal cells meet, they start migrating due to contact inhibition, and during this process, a hormone stimulates the basal cells to divide and replace the ones that have moved into the wound. This would facilitate the building of new strata and the thickening of the new epidermis.
