For my reflection, I would like to reflect on our skin. In the discussion about the integumentary system, the skin is defined to be the largest and most visible organ of our body. It serves as a protective covering of the external surface of the body and is vulnerable and susceptible to infections, traumas or damage. The skin too is our body’s first line of defense from external threats. Having understood such, I have realized further than our skin is more than just our external coat of protection. It is more than just a thing needed to be protected for its aesthetic appeal. Most people nowadays, especially the youth, are engaged with several skincare products that are aimed primarily to improve the aesthetic/beauty value of their skin rather than protect and preserve it for its purpose for us. Through our lesson today, I have realized that our skin is far more important and sophisticated than providing aesthetic appeals. It plays very crucial roles that helps our bodies maintain homeostasis and optimal conditions. Ultimately, our skin should be taken care of not just for its appearance but for the purpose that it serves us and our daily lives.
