When we say a gene is expressing itself, what does “gene expression” mean in relation to protein synthesis?

Gene expression, as it relates to protein synthesis, manifests itself through the translation of genes into proteins. It consists of two stages: transcription, or the replication of specific DNA to create a particular molecule of RNA, and translation, or the conversion of RNA into the appropriate sequence of amino acids to build proteins. Consequently, it is evident that gene expression also results in the generation of proteins, suggesting that gene expression and protein synthesis may be seen as related processes.
