Activity 2: Parts of the Cell
Yes, there would be a significant difference between my friend's smooth ER and my peroxisomes. Excessive alcohol consumption causes numerous pathological stress reactions, including protein accumulation in the smooth ER, which contributes to liver or pancreas impairment. The smooth ER in liver cells detoxifies drugs, so the more alcohol my friend consumes, the more smooth ER there is because the cells have responded to the toxins in their body, causing the cells to destruct and malfunction. Furthermore, peroxisomes produce phospholipids to prevent the formation of kidney stones. If my friend continues to drink, their peroxisomes will be overworked, and a failure of it could result in death.
