When we say a gene is expressing itself, what does "gene expression" mean in relation to protein synthesis?

The majority of genes have the necessary information needed to produce the functional molecules known as proteins. The process from gene to protein is intricate and closely regulated within each cell (a few genes produce regulatory molecules that aid the cell in protein synthesis). Transcription and translation are the two main procedures wherein both their results of working together are then called “gene expression”.
