1. METABOLISM: total body chemical reactions or processes
a. CATABOLISM: breakdown of large/ complex substances to smaller/ simpler components; ex. cellular respiration (glucose to ATP)
b. ANABOLISM: building up (synthesis) of large/ complex substances from smaller/ simpler; ex. photosynthesis (glucose from CO2 and H2O)
2. RESPONSIVENESS: also known as irritability; ability of the body of sense stimuli and react/ respond to it; ex. touching a hot object, lack of oxygen
3. GROWTH: increase in cell size and/or body size (due to the increase of cells); ex. getting taller
4. MOVEMENT: all bodily motion; ex. running
5. DIFFERENTIATION: cell development to a specialized state with specific function; ex. stem cells to egg cells
6. REPRODUCTION: production of offspring by formation of new cells or just formation of new cells; ex. sperm + egg = fertilized egg (zygote)
