ANATOMY SUBSPECIALTIES

  1. EMBRYOLOGY: study of fertilization of an egg to its first eight weeks of development
  2. DEVELOPMENT BIOLOGY: study of complete development; egg fertilization to death
  3. CELL BIOLOGY: study of the structure as well as functions of a cell
  4. SURFACE ANATOMY: study of external features and surface markings of the body
  5. GROSS ANATOMY: study of structures that can be seen with the naked eye
  6. SYSTEMIC ANATOMY: study of body structure by systems

PHYSIOLOGY SUBSPECIALTIES

  1. NEUROPHYSIOLOGY: study of the nerve cells (neurons) functional properties
  2. ENDOCRINOLOGY: study of hormones and how they function
  3. CARDIOVASCULAR PHYSIOLOGY: study of cardiovascular system functions, mainly the heart and blood vessels
  4. IMMUNOLOGY: study of the immune system functions
  5. RENAL PHYSIOLOGY: study of the kidney functions
  6. PATHOPHYSIOLOGY: particular syndrome or disease, and aging functional changes

BRAIN- GYRI AND SULCI

a. Structure: have elevated ridges of tissue (gyri) separated by sulci which are shallow grooves; iconic folded surface of the brain; looks like a walnut

b. Function: regulates the body; detects, interprets and processes data or information from the body

Relation: because of the structure of the entire surface of the brain, which have gyri and sulci that increases the surface area of the brain, this enables more nerve cells to process information from the body and do other brain functions
