Sex education is aimed at children and young adults so that they can make informed decisions regarding their sexual health. Unfortunately, due to the misconceptions about sex education being an encouragement for the youth to engage in sexual activities, combined with the Filipinos' conservative culture influenced by religious beliefs, the implementation of sex education in schools is lacking. Consequently, the rate of decline of the maternal mortality rate in our country is slow such that achieving the 3rd Sustainable Development Goal by 2030 is unimaginable. Maternal mortality and sex education are related to one another because one of the top causes of maternal mortality is unsafe abortion which happens due to unwanted pregnancies. If the youth had accessible health education regarding their sexual health, the occurrence of unwanted pregnancies may be minimised. Based on my experience, the implementation of sex education in schools, especially religious ones, is yet to be practised.
