Healthy Public Policy: Introduction of sexuality education lessons in public elementary and high schools

Target Population: Public elementary and high school students aged 10-18 years old

Advantages:

  • Participants would be able to cope up with the changes in their bodies that occur during puberty
  • Participants would be able to obtain vital knowledge about sexuality during the age of puberty where development of sexual organs and sexual experimentation occurs
  • Prevention of STDs and teenage pregnancy
  • Reduces the risk of unsafe abortion
  • Reduces risk of the youth engaging in risky sexual behaviors

Disadvantages:

  • Health teaching might be a little awkward at first since sex is unfortunately still a taboo topic in our country
  • Opposition from conservative adults

Do you see it being followed/implemented in your locality?

  • This is actually being conducted in our community and I’m fortunate enough to experience both being a participant and an educator regarding sex education. Before, I was a participant of lectures regarding the male and female reproductive system where we identified their parts and functions. As a peer educator, I have experienced teaching youths aged 12-18 years old regarding the male and female reproductive system, Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Expression (SOGIE), teenage pregnancy, and safe sex.
