Compulsory use of seat belts

1) Identify the target population

  • Making the use of seat belts compulsory is aimed to increase seat belt use for both drivers and passengers as seat belts are proven to reduce risk of injuries and deaths by preventing ejection from the vehicle.

2) Cite advantages and disadvantages (if any)

  • As stated earlier, seat belts dramatically reduce risk of injuries and deaths. Not wearing a seat belt makes a person 30 times more likely to be ejected from their vehicle in the case of a road crash. Statistics also show that more than 3 out of 4 of those who are ejected during a crash die due to their injuries (NHTSA, 2010).

3) Do you see it being followed/implemented in your locality?

  • Republic Act 8750, also known as the “Seat Belts Use Act of 1999,” is being implemented not only in certain localities but the whole country. Motorists can be observed following the mandate either for their own safety or to simply avoid penalties and fines.
